"Sassafras Roots" is the ninth song on Dookie. It comes after "She" and before "When I Come Around". The name of the song is derived from Sassafras, which is a plant and the main ingrediënt in traditional root beer. The name was chosen by Mike Dirnt.

This song is about wanting to hang around a bit and chill with someone ("So why are you alone wasting your time / When you could be with me wasting your time"). Since both characters were wasting time, they figured to do it together.
