Song meaning[edit | edit source]
When you're young, you feel like you can take on the world. Nothing can bring you down, you feel indestructible and the most important person the world has ever seen. When you start growing older you realize that you're just another person on this planet. You're not so special after all, even disposable. Experiencing these feelings makes the narrator feel down, and question his future (My immortal thoughts turned into just dreams of a dead future). Thinking he was immortal and important was just a lie to himself. Another interpretation could be made that the lies are told by older siblings, parents (the lyric I used to pray at night / Before I lay myself down / My mother said it was right / Her mother said it too... / Why?), and in the chorus talks about smoking, possibly for being frustrated to be welcomed to reality.
