"D.U.I." is a song written and sung by Tré Cool. It was originally recorded for Nimrod[1], but was not included on the album. It was later planned to be released on Shenanigans, but ended up as an outtake again.

"D.U.I." is featured as Track 7 on unmastered, promotional copies of Shenanigans, between "Espionage" and "Scumbag".[2]

"D.U.I." is, as the name implies, about driving under the influence.

History[edit | edit source]

Since the release of Shenanigans, Green Day fans have speculated over "D.U.I." because its title is listed in the album's liner notes. "D.U.I." is listed between "Tired of Waiting for You" and "Sick of Me" instead of "Espionage" and "Scumbag", which means that it could have been relocated as another track number. "D.U.I.'s" liner notes were spray-painted out in the booklet, which makes it impossible to read. By close inspection of the picture, however, you can see that Ken Allardyce recorded the song.

In 2006, in the "Q&A" section of the Idiot Club website, Mike Dirnt joked that "D.U.I." was removed because it was filled with "great advice"; then Billie Joe Armstrong stated that he "likes irresponsibility, but not that much irresponsibility".[citation needed]

Green Day's official site once falsely stated that "D.U.I" is featured on the Japanese release of Shenanigans.

In December 2016, a Green Day documentary entitled Green Day: The Ride aired on MTV. It briefly showed papers of Nimrod session tracks, and "D.U.I." is among the session tracks.[1]
