Chronology
Next song: "One for the Razorbacks"

"2000 Light Years Away" is the first track of Kerplunk. It is followed by the track "One for the Razorbacks".

"2000 Light Years Away" was written by Billie Joe Armstrong after he and Adrienne had their first kiss. The song is about how, at the time, Adrienne lived far away in Minnesota, which is miles away from where Billie lived in California. Billie felt the distance between the two states was so great that she was essentially "2,000 light years away" from him. The song "Westbound Sign", from Insomniac is similar to "2000 Light Years Away" because it also acknowledges how far Billie and Adrienne lived from each other; unlike this song, "Westbound Sign" is about Adrienne leaving her hometown to move in with Billie.

This song was not included on the greatest hits CD International Superhits! but was included on God's Favorite Band.

Music video[edit | edit source]

"2000 Light Years Away" had a music video created 26 years after Kerplunk's album release. The music video is a montage of Green Day's live performances in the early and mid-1990s, intended to take fans on a "trip down memory lane".[1]
