1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours is a compilation album that features Green Day's earliest songs, and it was first released on July 1, 1991. 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours features every song from Green Day's debut album 39/Smooth, their two EPs 1,000 Hours and Slappy, and "I Want to Be Alone" from The Big One compilation album by Flipside Records.

1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours is often mistaken as Green Day's debut album, which is actually 39/Smooth. This is because of the identical cover art (except for the album name), the similar title, and because 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours sold more copies than 39/Smooth.

Release[edit]

1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours was first released through Lookout! Records in 1991 (despite bearing a copyright notice dated 1990, which has led some sources to cite this as the release year).

13 years later, the album was re-released in different packaging and with enhanced CD-ROM features. In August 2005, Green Day pulled their catalog, including 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, from Lookout! due to unpaid royalties. The album remained out of print for nearly a year and a half.

On January 9, 2007 this album was re-released through Reprise Records and has been back in print since. In Europe, the album was already re-released by Epitaph Europe, and has remained in print. [citation needed]

1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours was reissued on vinyl on March 24, 2009. While this album was not released as a single record, it instead had an individual pressing of 39/Smooth and was packaged with two separate pressings of the 1,000 Hours and Slappy EPs. The song "I Want to Be Alone" is not present in this release.

Notes[edit]

  • In the back of the album's booklet, there is a drawing, depicting "The Ritual of The Trout". Referring to a dance that the members of Green Day found as an attempt for poseurs (namely the "Benicia Girls") trying to look like hardcore punks. This excerpt from the booklet clearly represents their dislike for the dance: "This is tolerated at Green Day shows but if your dear friend Lucky Dog here catches this shit going on at a Filth or Blatz show some poseur is gonna get MOSHED!"
